Multicultural Issues Report 1.19.10

Posted by MSA Senate on January 25, 2010

MCI is currently preparing for our next SWIPES event. During our next SWIPES event, which we are planning to have in April, we will be donating all proceeds to Intersection. Intersection is a non-profit after school program for teens in at-risk neighborhoods. MCI is also implementing a MCI Liaison program. The program is designed to have each member of MCI act as the MSA voice for Mizzou’s multicultural organization, giving the organizations the opportunity to speak about anything they like, dislike, or wish to see in legislation. Finally, we are also working on a MCI Scrapbook and research on some new legislation; raising the print quota, a possible nap room, and expanding the EZ Charge outside of campus.

Multicultural Issues Report: April 16, 2009

Posted by MSA Senate on April 16, 2009

It’s time for another SWIPES event. May 2nd is the date to remember and this time SWIPES will be bigger AND better!

The Multicultural Issues Committee has made a couple of changes to the upcoming event.

1. Due to the overwhelming response in March, we have expanded students’ outreach. We are now giving future events the general name of “SWIPES”.

With the first SWIPES event, we were able to provide enough food for Granny’s Kids to last six months. So we have decided to feature a different charity each time we have a SWIPES event. This change allows students to help more charitable organizations throughout the Columbia area.

**For the May 2nd event, we will feature the Ronald McDonald House of Columbia and the Ronald McDonald Family Room. Since 1983, the Ronald McDonald House Charity has been providing an affordable place of comfort for over 20,000 families whose children are in the hospital. Families often travel many miles to give their children the medical treatment that they often can’t find near their home. The Ronald McDonald Family Room is a special place that provides families with sick children an escape that they can go to get away from the hospital atmosphere. These two programs rely solely on the generosity of caring businesses, groups, and individuals. Our SWIPES event will be a great help to these organizations because we will be able to provide the families with food. That way, they will have one less worry during their stay at the Ronald McDonald House.

2. We will have TWO locations for our May 2nd event, which will begin at 11:30AM: The Plaza 900 Amphitheater AND the space by the Dobb’s Time Out. This additional location will allow more students to participate, especially those who live near Dobbs.

The MCI Committee is looking to partner with more students to make the May 2nd event even more successful; however we need more student volunteers. We need YOU! We hope you or your organization will volunteer to join in the fun and help the community!

Beyond this, MCI is in the planning process to guarantee next semester will be an eventful and effective one!

Posted by MSA Senate on February 15, 2009

MCI is working on putting together our community service project called “Swipes 4 Granny’s Kids”, and we have set the date for the first Saturday in March. We are working with Porscha to get the details on how we want to advertise, and get the event together. We are also continuing to plan our tour of the different minority organizations, and we are going to help the African Students Association with their “AFRICA Week”.

Bruce Hall

Porscha Kirkwood

Phyllis Williams

Meeting:

We are planning for a large Multicultural Town hall meeting on March 11th as a substitute for our MCI meeting. An invitation will be extended to all students on campus, especially members of different multicultural groups. There are several things that we really want to cover during this meeting:

  • We would like to let them now what is going on in MSA
  • We would like to discuss the Ward Connerly/Missouri Civil Rights Initiative
  • We would like to get different students opinions on the Diversity Course
  • We would also like to see what different initiatives and projects other students want us to take on.

We went further in depth about what had previously been going on in the committee. We also had more discussion about the diversity course.

October 16: Multicultural Issues

Posted by MSA Senate on October 22, 2007

The Multicultural Issues Committee met briefly last week to execute last minute Hate Wall preparations. Despite the rain on Wednesday, the Hate Wall event was a great success. Set up in Brady Commons, the wall accumulated hundreds of phrases and words as students passed through the entry way. The committee was excited to see so many of our peers participate in the event.  The wall was destroyed on the same afternoon with hopes that increased diversity awareness lie in its wake. The Multicultural Issues Committee will meet again this week on Thursday at 6:30pm in conjunction with the Missouri International Student Council.

October 8 Committee Reports: Multicultural Issues

Posted by MSA Senate on October 8, 2007

MIC met on Monday night and carpooled to a Committee member’s house to construct our Hate Wall. Through teamwork and craftsmanship, we erected an 8’ x 16’ canvas primed and ready to raise diversity awareness. The Committee plans to continue our work throughout the rest of the week and reach out to other multicultural organizations by forming valuable liaisons. The Hate Wall event will be Wednesday October 17th beginning at 10 a.m. in Speaker Circle. At 2 p.m. the Hate Wall will be destroyed. All students, faculty and the public are encouraged to come by and write on the wall.
